“kady bar tha doh’”

wrote for my english class as an easy extra credit…but forgot how much I enjoy writing…even though I wouldn’t say this was exactly a masterpiece…pfh.  Also, if you know the old saying “It’s gonna be ‘Kady bar the door’ (or dialectically (right word) correct: “Kady bar tha doh’ “)” this may make sense to you…

Kady

Now when you say to Kady,

“Bolt and bar the shutter!”

Keep the lights down lowly,

Not one word dare you utter.

“What’s keeping out the Death Smell?”

Just boards, nails, and splinter.

“What’s clanking those porch pails?”

It’s not the frost and winter.

There’s glass there on the floor now

I cut my foot running

Back and forth in darkness

And do you feel what’s coming?

What’s keeping out the Death Man?

Not the bolts, bars, or shutters.

He came in through the floor boards

And waited in the corners.

So it begins…

I have several obsessions in my life, one of the most prevelent being: Music.  And starting last year I discovered the phenomena known as the Summer Music Festival in the form of a festival named, Bonnaroo.   Oh. My. God.

I won’t get into the awesomeness of last years Roo, but I will get into the awesomeness of what this years Bonnaroo seems to have in store:

First: Nine Inch Nails is a headliner. AAAAHHHHH;LKJB; LAEJ KLJ j;lakjd flkjALKJDS;LK JFAD. Oookay, got that out of the way.  The word “excited” doesn’t cut it… Let’s just say I saw them once, then had to see them again (I had no choice in the matter, it just had to happen lol) and now AGAIN?! Except this time in Mega Format. WOW.  I am so so sooo excited.

Secondly: And this rivals the first: THE YEAH YEAH YEAHS.  I’m not sure that people understand my obsession with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.  I know the words to every single song (which is impressive considering most of the lyrics are indecipherable). I have a girl crush on Karen O (and Jenny Lewis, but I’ve already seen her twice with Rilo Kiley and she’ll be at Roo 09 solo, sweeeeet).  She’s effing CRAZY and their genre is “Art Rock.”  She dresses up in sequin leotards and headdresses and you never know what the hell she’s going to do live.  Speaking of live, in order to see them live you have to live in a major city like NYC, Chicago, San Fran – in other words…my chances of ever seeing them have been slim to none – UNTIL NOW.

Thirdly: I GET TO SEE MGMT AGAINNNN!!!!!  My greatest regret from last years Roo was that I didn’t fully appreciate MGMT, I somehow had missed that undercurrent of subculture, which is slowly becoming pop culture.   Anyway, I get a second chance, and it will be feeling electric, and being and indierokker, all in a 4th dimension transition.

Also, other acts I’m beyond excited about seeing are, in no specific order:

  • Ben Harper
  • Crystal Castles,
  • Santogold (she is a goddess),
  • Neko Case (did you know she was banned from the grand ol’ opery because she took her shirt off during a performance? hahahaha),
  • Girl Talk (its going to make a fab early AM set),
  • Okkervil River (like a wierd mix of The Killers and Iron & Wine)
  • Andrew Bird (beautiful)
  • Bon Iver (also beautiful)
  • The Ting Tings (oh, we WILL walk)
  • TV on the Radio (already saw them, but I have a suspicion every concert experience is different)
  • The Mars Volta (honestly haven’t listened to a lot of their stuff, but I’ve heard good things)
  • Brett Dennen (You’re coming this year Koti!!!!)
  • The Decemberists (very interesting group and I <3 them, plus they’re from South Carolina. Represent. (yes I just said “represent”) )
  • Merle Haggard (I mean…what? still excited)
  • Ted Leo and the Pharmacists (saw them once before, but once again didn’t fully appreciate)
  • Robyn (kind of like Katy Perry, but cooler – not on my MUST SEE list)
  • Band of Horses (similar to Rogue Wave – who in my opinion was kind of boring live -, hopefully they’ll be more entertaining?)
  • othersss, lots and lots of others

One of my favorite things about Bonnaroo…despite all these artists I’ve listed is the fact that you go and discover new music as well.  For example, last year I fell madly in love with Jose Gonzalez, The Swell Season, Battles and a few others – bands that I probably wouldn’t have discovered otherwise.

I can’t wait.

Here’ s a small sampler list of Previews for Bonnaroo 2009.  Hope you enjoy listening/watching as much as I enjoyed making it (I love lists of songs…obviously):

*Sorry about not having all the vids right here on the page. A lot of the embedding codes have been disabled. Boo.

“Electric Feel” – MGMT; this will forever be (in my mind) the ultimate song for Bonnaroo.   I mean, just watch the video and you’ll understand (I really want some of the radioactive shiny liquid stuff…whoa.).

“Untrust Us” – Crystal Castles; I mean. Whoa. Sidenote: They actually opened a couple of shows for NIN (actually so did several other ppl at Roo this year…hmmm interesting)

“L.E.S. Artistes” – Santogold; this video is genius. As is her take on music in general ( in my opinion)

“Survivalism” – Nine Inch Nails; Hope you survive the mud and madness that will occur when they take the main stage…

“10 x 10″ – The Yeah Yeah Yeahs; sample the maddness of a live YYY show.  Actually, to be honest, Karen O is kind of scary. Wouldn’t want to meet her in a dark ally, I would like to be her BFF though. lol …oh gah it’s going to be awesome.

“Great DJ” – The Ting Tings; just fu-uh-uh-uh-uhhn. ;)

“Imitosis” – Andrew Bird; This was made to hippie dance under a shady tree.

“Staring at the Sun” Tv on the Radio; The feeling I get when I hear this song never changes. Ever, ever. EVER.

All right you have, fingers. Youtube the rest.

Hi, I’m Susie Homemaker (aaah ha)

red-velvet-bunt-cake  Okay, seriously…I made a perfect red velvet, bunt cake.

I’ve hardly ever made a cake, much less a perfect one.

So perfect in fact I had to take a picture and share.

  Happy Thanksgiving (again)

P.s. Sarah and I are basically awesome because we cooked/prepped-for-cooking the majority of our Thanksgiving feast tonight, that included but was not limited too that oh so pretty bunt cake to your left (sorry, I’m really proud of myself hehe), broccoli casserole, pumpkin pie, ambrosia, dressing, etc. etc. Oh yeaaa.

Pictures coming sooooon :-)

Dairy Queen, you are awesome. The End.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when companies slap a symbol, like a pink ribbon for breast cancer or any color ribbon for anything, just to market an item, just to make people feel better about themselves when they buy it.  But today I saw something and it made me feel quite happy:

Dairy Queen has teamed up with the Children’s Miracle Network and on this Thursday, August 7, 2008, all of their profits, not a portion, all of their profits will go to this organization.
What that means is that I will be going to Dairy Queen for a lovely chocolate sunday and you should too.  Also, check out their website to learn more about Miracle Treat Day (how awesome is that name?).

charity is fresh2o

So I was googling random things (underwater photography or something wierd) and came across a UK charity called fresh2o

It’s an organization bringing to light the fact that for many people in many countries around the world people do not have access to fresh water.  The statistic that really popped out at me was that roughly 5,000 children die because of dirty water every day.  fresh20 states that “clean water is a basic human right” and works towards helping people attain that right.
I think I may have found a cause to keep an eye on.
P.s. super fabulous underwater photography too featuring the likes of Lily Cole and Kiera Knightly.  The photographer is Candice.

Retelling the old with the new

I’m starting a book called “Weight” by Jeanette Winterson. So far I’ve only read the first few pages, the introduction. Where Winterson explains her motive behind retelling the myth of Atlas and Heracles and also says that the retelling of this story is written “directly out of [her] own situation.” She uses the words, “loneliness, isolation, responsibility, burden, and freedom” as the topics she explores. Seems rather appropriate for my own situation.

I bought this particular book off the sale table at Barnes & Noble. I loooove book sales. You always find all sorts of little treasures.

Also, I think the cover art is fantastic. I wish there were a shirt dress with this maxiprinted, and a little off center.

I’d wear it.

coexisting

Photobucket

I have a new obsession with the “Coexist” campaign. It isn’t new by any means. The evidence of it has been around for a while – a subtle graphic, plain blue backgrounds with the letters of the word created by symbols of religions, movements, ideas, thoughts… It’s kind of hard to miss once you take note of it. Bumper stickers, tee shirts, symbolically covering Bono’s eyes,

I’m sure some people scoff at the symbolism of the graphic and the campaign, “Hippies,” “tree huggers,” “liberals.”

I for one want to not act like a tree-hugging, liberal, hippie and shake those people and say,

What is so stupid about protecting and caring for the earth we live on? What is so stupid about trying to care about the people we’re around, regardless of their religion, their race, their beliefs? What is so wrong with actually living that motto that is pounded into our heads from the day our parents try to teach us morals: Do unto others as you would have done unto you… and mind you, that is not just a Christian idea, that idea spans across all of the worlds religions, and even the ideals that are not associated with religious beliefs (*gasp* atheism).

I want to say, stand up and take responsibility, in a positive matter. And as cliche as it sounds, vote for peace, not for hate, or war, or fear. Vote for the positive and, above all else, vote for HOPE. Hope for our children, hope for your grandchildren, hope for ourselves and hope too…

friday night.

today Sarah quit her job and came home and Jennifer and Bobby had put together a fantastic little party. Bobby had made a cd full of job quitting theme songs and jennifer had cook cook cookeddd and made pink signs that said things like “Yay 4 You”, “Yippee!”, and “Yahoo!” Very fun.

we took our hotdogs and hamburgers and sat on the front porch. It was the perfect hot summer evening. Key word: Hot. Which lead to the next event, which included Jennifer, Sarah and I running through the sprinkler in the front yard until we were completely soaked (fully clothed I might add) and then we took the party to the back deck and hopped in the hottub in our undies. Yay!

Good times.

Pictures soon.
